Unfortunately your best course of action is to let the beekeeper take them off the property. Relocating a nest is a pretty big hassle. You must move them at least 7 miles from their previous nest or they will return to the original hive site. Then you must let them acclimate to their new location so that they think of it as home which takes at least 6 weeks as you want all of the old worker bees to die off. Only then could you relocate the hive to a different spot on your property. With all that moving you stand a pretty good chance of damaging the queen.

Sounds like the advice you received is accurate. Especially about removing all the scent or bees will resettle into that cavity of the house. You pretty much need to tear out that part of the wall and put in new materials. Even if you have this bunch of bees removed, chances are that another hive will settle in there due to the smell if you don't thoroughly remove all materials.
